Kent tackles road freight with PIE Mapping

ITSReviewAnnual2015

54 ITS REVIEW Annual Review 2015 Kent County Council has renewed its contract for three more years for PIE Mapping’s Freight Gateway Service. The service is a specialist online routing system which allows local authorities to address their road freight strategies to engage with local residents, cut congestion, reduce accidents – and help hauliers. Typically, the product is integrated into a council’s existing website (http://freightgateway.co.uk/kent/) and, although it is as familiar and easy to use as Google, AA and Bing maps, it contains vital and up-todate freight-specific information to enable hauliers to plan greener, safer and often quicker routes. Alongside helpful details such as suitable parking areas, narrow road warnings and HGV restricted roads, Freight Gateway also incorporates online postcode to postcode freight routing, avoiding known problem areas. PIE Mapping are longestablished and highly regarded providers of mapping systems, specifically for truck drivers and haulage companies in the UK and have developed several national freight planning websites. Such sites incorporate nationally available height, width and weight restrictions allowing drivers to find routes that use roads appropriate to their particular vehicles. Local authorities which work with PIE Mapping can then add their own road restriction information to create Kent tackles road freight with PIE Mapping
